The Benefits of Introducing Retinol to Your Skincare Routine
Retinol... a name that all skincare lovers are familiar with. But what’s all the fuss about? What does it actually do to your skin, and why should you be using it? Here’s why...
Retinol is a synthetic derivative of vitamin A that helps to boost collagen production and can aid in cell turnover. This results in more even, smoother skin and helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and sunspots. Retinol is often used in the treatment of acne because of its rapid cellular turnover, and has been used to help treat some cases of skin cancer for this reason, too.
Retinol is best applied at night, and normally comes in the form of a serum or cream. Retinol is generally formulated with hydrating ingredients to minimize potential dryness and irritation. It is generally recommended that moisturiser is applied to the skin regularly when using retinol in order to avoid flakiness.
Tip: Layer your retinol on after your moisturiser to create a barrier that will help minimize irritation.

It is important to note that retinol can trigger dryness, burning, stinging, and/or peeling of the skin within the first few weeks of use. You should also know that using retinol makes you more sensitive to the sun, so it’s essential that you use sunscreen if you’re thinking about including retinol in your skincare routine. It is not recommended that you use Retinol while pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a skin condition such as eczema.
